JIMMY FORTUNE WAS ONLY SUPPOSED TO STAND IN FOR A WHILE. THE SPACE LEW DeWITT LEFT WAS THAT HARD TO CARRY. By the early 1980s, Lew DeWitt had been fighting Crohn’s disease for years. In November 1981, he stepped away from the Statlers for surgery and treatment, and at his own suggestion Jimmy Fortune came in as a temporary replacement. Fortune played his first show with them on January 28, 1982, in Savannah. Lew tried to return that summer, but it lasted less than a week. By August, Fortune was permanent. That is what makes the handoff linger. Jimmy was not stepping into some ordinary vacancy. Lew was a founding member, the original tenor, and the writer of “Flowers on the Wall.” The group kept going, but it did so with the shape of Lew’s absence still fresh inside it..
